Artist's Biography

Lisa Tchakmakian is a Los Angeles-based visual artist. She studied Fine Art at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design and the University of Southern California, where she received a BFA and MFA in 2001 and 2003, respectively. The nature of her work and artistic goals can best be described as a passion and commitment to the study, research, innovation and experimentation of the following ideas: wonder, optical phenomena, the interaction of light and matter, perception, magic, illusion, phantasmagoria, surprise, astonishment, shadow play, pre-cinematic devices, projection, In-between moments, flashes, fragments, light, glow, becoming palpable, shifting, visceral responses, shadows, abstractions, layering, motion, defining space, nature, natural formations, bodies, revealing a growth, generative, bioluminescent creatures, crystallization, patterns, gestures, forms creating atmosphere, science, experimentation, climactic moments, moments of awe, translucence, reflection, beauty, pleasure, and the sublime.



Curator's Biography

In 2010, Emma Gray launched Emma GrayHQ (EGHQ), a one-year project space for contemporary art on La Cienega Blvd in Culver City. Gray was also the former Features and West Coast Editor for ArtReview Magazine and a columnist for Artnet and Saatchi. Most recently she worked as West Coast consultant to the New York-based firm The Heller Group. EGHQ, a small, triangle-shaped gallery, was established in September 2010 until August 2011 to showcase contemporary artists who were invited to create month-long site-specific exhibitions. EGHQ has been featured in The Art Newspaper and Angeleno Magazine and the shows there have been reviewed in Artforum, The L.A. Times and L.A. Weekly among other publications.
