Grand Pale Maw Opening Reception

November 6, 2011 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

06 November 2011, 1 – 4 pm
with a special Re-Visions of LA Workshop

LACE is thrilled to host the opening reception for Sean Sullivan’s Grand Pale Maw. Working entirely in black marker and latex paint, Sullivan created an expansive wall drawing over the course of several months. Now completed, Grand Pale Maw engages the narrow rear hallway by emphasizing the idea of “passage” as a physical space as well as a narrative of inheritance.  In his work, Sullivan often attempts to address mythological divisions surrounding nature and the artificial world by creating highly focused handcrafted drawings, derived from a technologically sophisticated display process.  His familiarity with the subject is derived primarily through archives consisting of disparate modes of capture such as the digital, the photographic and found objects.

On the occasion of the mural’s completion, LACE’s free monthly artist-led drawing workshop ReVisions of LA invites artists Elana Melissa Hill, David Festa, and Allison Miller to lead a drawing workshop based on Sullivan’s finely detailed mural. The guest instructors will work one-on-one with participants to spark conversation and create artworks following Sullivan’s distinct style and concepts, including ideas of texture, rendering, surface and the influence of the Hudson River School.

Join us for an afternoon of celebration and creative exploration  Sean Sullivan’s Grand Pale Maw.

Grand Pale Maw will be on view through 29 January 2012. For more information, visit welcometolace.org/exhibitions/view/grand-pale-maw/.

ABOUT REVISIONS OF LA
LACE is located in the heart of Hollywood, an ideal place to observe and contemplate the collision of Los Angeles — its intricate networks hum with activity as resources are transferred and spaces are reconstructed through use or development. ASAP’s 2011 Re-Visions of LA drawing workshops will build conversations around how our urban environments are constructed and what that means to our every day lives. Each month a new group of artists will spend an afternoon at LACE providing free drawing classes.

ABOUT ASAP
ASAP (after school arts program) is an arts education collective with a faculty and student population that is always in flux. Led by Michael Ano, Elana Melissa Hill and Elizabeth Watkins, ASAP is motivated by the belief that “Arts education should be available to everyone.” All levels and ages are welcome as we talk about Hollywood while drawing our surroundings. All workshops are free, and all materials will be supplied.
