Private Time: 4 Episodes

Join us for an evening of performances and video, curated by 2012 CEC Artslink Fellow Zane Datava. For Private Time: 4 Episodes, Datava has commissioned Los Angeles electronic musicians and sound artists to create new scores for video work by Latvian artists. This event will feature performances by Glenn Bach, Infinite Body, Yann Novak, and Steve Roden accompanying a video program including Long Day (2012) by Krišs Salmanis, We used to live a private life (2011) by Kate Krolle and Visualisation of Thoughts (2011) and Still Life (2011) by Linda Konone.

Private Time: 4 Episodes offers a rare opportunity to experience new work by emerging Latvian artists, and seeks to bridge two arts communities by pairing these video makers with Los Angeles electronic sound and music composers. The long-standing practice of experimental film and video has been paralleled by an avant-garde and cutting-edge approach to music composition, and the role of technology in developing these divergent art forms has been vital and inseparable from the aesthetic impact and meaning of the works. However integral sound has become to our interpretation of picture, there is still such a wide gap not only between the understanding of the impact sound has on image, but also between sound and visual artists in the visual art world.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Glenn Bach weaves field recordings, digital audio, and analog electronics into quiet, meditative soundscapes, with additional interests in improvised sound design for dance and silent film. His published music includes a duo project with John Kannenberg on the UK label Entr’acte, and a solo record on the Scottish label Dust, Unsettled.  He has performed or collaborated with such musicians as Steve Roden, Jeffrey Roden, Aaron Ximm, Chris Schlarb, smgsap, Marcos Fernandes, and many others. Bach leads the improvising ensembles Southern California Soundscape Ensemble, Double Blind, and Intense Situations of Peril, and oversees the MPRNTBL netlabel. His long-term project, Atlas Sets, is a collaborative conversation about musical map-making, contemplative practice, creative community, and artistic intention. Infinite Body is the performing name of Kyle Parker. His performances use bright light and loud sound in an attempt to push the sensory experiences of beauty and ecstasy into extreme and overwhelming territory. His recorded work has been released by several independent labels on vinyl, CD, and limited cassette formats. He currently lives in Los Angeles.

Linda Konone currently lives in Riga, Latvia. She is now completing her master studies in Visual Communication at Art Academy of Latvia. She mainly works with moving image and sound.

Kate Krolle currently lives and works in Paris. She has a Master’s degree from the Arts Academy of Latvia, Graphic Arts Department. Kate Krolle’s artworks are reminiscent of visual poems that reflect the unaccepted, incomprehensible and lonely side of human nature. Yann Novak is a sound, video and installation artist living and working in Los Angeles. His work utilizes different forms of digital documentation as a point of departure. Through the digital manipulation of these sound and image files, his works serve as a translation from documents of personal experiences into an open ended autobiographical narrative. Novak’s performance work have been experienced internationally at sound art/electronic music festivals including the AxS Festival (CA), Decibel Festival (WA), Forward Festival (DC), Mutek Festival (Montreal, QB), Resonant Forms Festival (CA), Soundwalk (CA) and at art venues and museums including the Fiske Planetarium (CO), Human Resources (CA), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA), Machine Project (CA), Oboro (Montreal, QB), The Stone (NY), Torrance Art Museum (CA) and others. yannnovak.com

Steve Roden is a visual and sound artist, born in Los Angeles and living in Pasadena. He began his musical journey as the lead singer of the punk band, Seditionaries, from 1979-82. Since completing graduate school in 1986, he has exhibited his works in museums, arts spaces and festival worldwide. Recent activities include: Shells, Bells, Steps and Silences at LACE, Rag Picking at Meinblau Kunsthaus Berlin, Silence at the Menil Collection. He was recently commissioned to create a sound work to accompany an exhibition of civil war photographs at the Huntington Library in Pasadena. Krišs Salmanis uses animation, video, photography, objects as well as his body in his art. However, it is neither the media used, nor the unifying themes, but rather the employed method what characterizes his work. In Latvian there is not an appropriate synonym for the word joke to denote that the element which in Krišs Salmanis’ work can be perceived as irony or humor, is instead mental exercise, intellectual activity, wit as a twist of thought. The making of Krišs Salmanis’ work is often seemingly unnecessarily time- and effort- consuming. It is a kind of self-invented craftsmanship, which, even if unnoticed by the spectator, is a vital component of the final piece.
