Beyond Borders was a talk presented in the context of the exhibition Borders of Freedom / Contornos de Libertad. This special event invited 3 artists from different regions, 1 of them whose work is a part of this exhibition. Joining Patricio Majano (Borders of Freedom curator) from El Salvador for a conversation, are Abigail Reyes from El Salvador, Arshia Haq from Los Angeles, US, and Liliana Hueso from Tijuana, MX. The talk addressed themes related to gender and freedom, considering the works of these 3 artists, the regions they live in, and their personal stories. This event aimed to expand the dialogue surrounding these themes, connecting the art practices of three regions that share a similar cultural and political context.

Abigail Reyes is a visual artist and poet. Reyes has held solo exhibitions at the Museum of Art of El Salvador (MARTE); Poporopo Alternative Project, Guatemala City, Guatemala; Lokkus Contemporary Art Gallery, Medellin, Colombia; Extra Gallery, Guatemala City, Guatemala; Manzanita Hall Gallery California State University Northridge, USA, the Museum of Art and Design, San Jose, Costa Rica, among others. She has participated in group exhibitions at the Museo Jumex, Mexico City, Mexico; Sies + Höke Gallery in Düsseldorf, Germany; the Palais de Tokyo in Paris, France; TEOR/éTica in San José, Costa Rica; the Taimiao Art Gallery in Beijing, China; Städtisches Galerie Wolfsburg, Germany; Context Miami, USA; Cinema Tonalá, Bogota, Colombia; Alternative Project, Guatemala City, Guatemala; National Room, San Salvador, El Salvador; Lokkus Contemporary Art Gallery, Medellin, Colombia; Cultural Center of Spain, San Salvador, El Salvador. She lives and works in La Libertad, El Salvador.

Arshia Fatima Haq (born in Hyderabad, India, based in Los Angeles, CA) works across film, visual art, performance and sound. She is interested in counter-archives and speculative documentaries and is currently exploring themes of embodiment and mysticism within the Islamic context. Her work emerges from multiple personas – woman, Muslim, immigrant, citizen – and is conceptualized in feminist modes outside of the Western model. She is the founder of Discostan, a collaborative decolonial project working with cultural production from the SWANA (South and West Asia and North Africa) region. Haq’s work has been featured at Museum of Contemporary Art Tucson, the Station Museum of Contemporary Art, Broad Museum, LACE, Toronto International Film Festival, MOMA New York, Hammer Museum, LAXArt, Centre Georges Pompidou, and the Pacific Film Archive. Currently, she hosts and produces monthly radio shows on Dublab and NTS, and recently released an album of field recordings from Pakistan on the Sublime Frequencies label. She received her MFA in Film and Video from California Institute of the Arts in 2005, and is a recipient of the California Community Foundation Visual Artist Fellowship, the Rema Hort Mann Emerging Artist Grant, and the Onassis AIR Fellowship.

Liliana Hueso is a queer bi-national bilingual college professor, media educator, accomplished filmmaker, photographer, and activist. She has extensive experience in teaching media, facilitating workshops, and organizing film screenings and photo exhibitions on both sides of the border. Liliana’s work has been exhibited in various bi-national conferences, film events and galleries. As a border artist, her work provides a unique perspective revealed in the storytelling quality of her photos.

Patricio Majano is a Salvadoran curator, artist and professor. He is the Curator and Interim Director of Y.ES Contemporary and a professor at the School of Arts of the University of El Salvador. Previously, he collaborated in the Educational Programs of the Museum of Art of El Salvador and the Forma Museum in San Salvador. He earned his BA from the University of El Salvador. His practice focuses in Salvadoran context and environment.
