Please join us for an overview of immigration law in the U.S. and how we can strengthen the rights of immigrant populations here in California. Our speakers will discuss how immigration is framed in the U.S. constitution and what legislative measures are underway to protect the human rights of immigrants here in California.
Following the talk postcard writing stations and refreshments will be set up so you can write your California representatives to encourage them to pass legislation like SB54 (Sanctuary Bill) and the Dignity Not Detention Act.
More about our speakers:
Kathleen Kim is a professor of law at Loyola Law School. She is a nationally-recognized expert on immigration and human trafficking. Her scholarship investigates the intersection of immigration law, workplace rights, civil rights and the 13th Amendment, and has addressed, among other things, the law’s response to coercion in the context of human trafficking and the exploitation of undocumented workers. She is co-author of the first casebook on human trafficking and from 2013-2016 she served as a Los Angeles Police Commissioner.
Emi MacLean is an attorney with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network (NDLON) working on legal and policy issues facing low-wage immigrant workers. She has previously worked as a legal officer with the Open Society Justice Initiative, focused largely on freedom of information and expression; a staff attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights in the organization’s Guantanamo Global Justice Initiative; and with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF, or Doctors without Borders).
