Ear as Eye

February 2 – March 3, 1997

Organized by Brandon LaBelle and Steve Roden, Ear as Eye featured the drawings and other visual artwork of one hundred sound artists in addition to a listening station. Performances in conjunction with this exhibition featured Jaap Blonk and Anna Homler on March 7 and Speculum Fight, Robert Dansby and FIN on March 14.

Join us on Saturday, December 14, from 1–3 PM for “The Delicious Apothecary: Cooking Workshop,” part of our PST ART exhibition, “Beatriz da Costa: (un)disciplinary tactics.”

This hands-on workshop explores “The Delicious Apothecary” (2012–13)—a wooden medicine cabinet featuring spices with cancer-fighting properties—and “The Anti-Cancer Cookbook” (2024). Led by chef Michelle Fuerst, participants will collaboratively prepare recipes from the cookbook, while learning about Fuerst’s past collaborations with Beatriz da Costa.

Held offsite at LACE’s Executive Director’s home, the workshop will follow the gardening workshop at LAMAG and conclude with a shared celebratory meal. Participants will be gifted a condensed version of da Costa’s ambitious artwork, The Anti-Cancer Survival Kit (2012–13), courtesy of the Beatriz da Costa Estate.

📣 Register now for our Gardening and Cooking Workshops on Saturday, December 14th! These workshops activate Beatriz da Costa’s “The Cost of Life” (2011–13) series, which grew out of the artist’s experience with cancer.

🪴“The Life Garden: Gardening Workshop” focuses on an indoor medicinal garden that grows herbs and plants known to help people living with cancer. Taylor “The Plant Plug” Lindsey will share their gardening expertise with the public as well as instructions on how to build your own indoor medicinal garden. Supported by botanist Aleen Vartivarian (@aleenvartivarian), workshop participants will also learn more about the health benefits of anti-cancer nutrition.

🫛 “The Delicious Apothecary: Cooking Workshop,” led by chef Michelle Fuerst, utilizes ingredients from “The Life Garden” and “The Delicious Apothecary” (2012–13), a wooden medicine cabinet with spices known to have cancer-fighting properties. Participants will be invited to collaboratively assemble nutritional recipes from “The Anti-Cancer Cookbook,” while learning more about Fuerst’s previous collaborations with da Costa.
