home away from (lejos de casa, hogar), aborda experiencias de fronteras, desplazamiento, y procedimientos migratorios, constantes que se manifiestan en la vida cotidiana de quienes migran a otro país, a través de una instalación inmersiva en la sala principal de LACE.

Jimena Sarno ha creado, diseñado, y construido home away from durante su residencia. La instalación ocupa todo el espacio con una estructura permeable de madera — tiene una sóla entrada, y se puede rodear desde el exterior — la luz se filtra desde el interior hacia las paredes produciendo sombras oscilantes. Dos video proyecciones muestran detalles de autorretratos realizados por jóvenes inmigrantes, resguardando la estructura central.

El proyecto de Sarno se inspira en Hollywood flats (mamparas), utilizadas como fondos de escenarios en cine, listones de madera, que tradicionalmente se utilizaron para construir paredes interiores en arquitectura doméstica; y centros de detención fronterizos, donde personas son retenidos mientras se encuentran en  proceso, antes de poder acceder a otro país. El video se compone de autorretratos ideales, pertenecientes a un grupo de estudiantes de secundaria.  El contorno de los rostros se utilizó para crear mapas, revelando sus características con una luz blanca rítmica linear en el video, el sonido es de un escáner en movimiento mezclado con frecuencias curativas.

La secuencia de palabras “lejos de casa hogar lejos de casa hogar lejos de casa hogar” gira alrededor de la  imposibilidad de establecer un espacio nuevo para vivir, o incluso el regreso al lugar de origen, mientras el individuo es constantemente disciplinando, prohibido, e interrogando en sus deseos y búsquedas.

El espacio será activado durante el período de la exposición con una serie de colaboraciones artísticas: performances, intervenciones, y talleres Una llamada para desafiar e interrumpir las estructuras que determinan y definen nuestras trayectorias.

Julio 12, 7pm: Actuación y intervención escultórico por Nooshin Rostami
Agosto 1 y 2,  2pm-5pm: Taller de escritura para jóvenes impartido por Jessica Ceballos.
Agosto 13, 6pm: Evento de clausura- Celebración de escucha, presentaciones de arte sonoro  a cargo de Jimena Sarno y las artistas invitadas Cay Castagnetto y Arshia Haq, en colaboración con VOLUME (volumen).

Esencia H.O.M.E.
Jenny Qaqundah, de origen palestino con conocimientos en herbolaria, ha preparado una esencia reconstituyente con toques cítricos para elevar el alma. Las hierbas seleccionó para este formula terapéutico son vetiver, viluria, hojas de salvia, pachulí obscuro, romero, cedro, nuez moscada, bergamota and limón. La mezcla tiene tintes de su hogar árabe.

El lanzamiento de la publicación de home away fromen colaboración con Tiny Splendor, ensayo de Manuel Shvartzberg, otros escritos e imágenes de artistas invitadas y participantes del taller de escritura.

 Jimena Sarno es una artista multidisciplinaria y organizadora. Trabaja con una serie de medios que incluyen instalación, sonido, video, textos y escultura. Nació en Buenos Aires, Argentina y  actualmente vive en Los Ángeles, su experiencia como inmigrante de Suramérica informa su práctica artística. Fundadora de analog dissident (disidente analógico), una charla mensual que presenta dos artistas invitadas y fomenta técnicas interdisciplinariasy participación crítica afuera de instituciones de las artes tradicionales. Su obra ha sido exhibido en LACE, PØST, Human Resources, UCI Contemporary Art Center, Control Room, Fellows of Contemporary Art y Grand Central Art Center entre otras colaboraciones. Sarno recibió la beca2016 California Community Foundation Fellowship for Visual Artists.

The works selected for “A Tender Excavation” d The works selected for “A Tender Excavation” depart from personal, familial, or historical photographic archives which ultimately are recontextualized through installation, collage, painting, film, video, sculpture, or mixed media, reimagining and reconnecting lost fragments to speak about personal and collective resilience, constructing new possibilities for an interconnected futurity.

LACE is thrilled to introduce three of the artists featured in the exhibition...

✷ Mercedes Dorame (@mercedes.dorame)  is a multi-disciplinary artist who calls on her Tongva ancestry to engage the problematics of (in)visibility and ideas of cultural construction and ancestral connection to land and sky.

✷ Leah King (@leahkinglive) is a multimedia artist working in collage, sound, film, and performance. Her intricately layered visual and sonic works explore race, gender, and power through a futurist lens.

✷ Ann Le (@annsgood) is a LA based artist and Senior Lecturer of Photography and Fine Arts at Loyola Marymount University. Her photomontages explore identity, family history, the diaspora, and the space in between becoming Vietnamese-American.

Jason is currently a student at Los Angeles City College studying animation. He is a Mexican American artist making work about queer identity and bear subculture, inspired by indigenous art, pop culture, and consumerism. Jason makes ceramic sculptures, paintings, comics, and enjoys swimming, sci-fi, collecting toys, and his cats.

⋆ Star Montana (@starmontana) is a photo-based artist who lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. She was born and raised in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of East Los Angeles, which is predominantly Mexican American and serves as the backdrop to much of her work.

⋆ Prima Jalichandra-Sakuntabhai (@prima_jalichndrsakntbhai) is a transdisciplinary artist, working across performance, video and installation, based in Los Angeles. Born in Thailand in 1989, they grew up in Europe before moving to the US in 2011.

⋆ Arlene Mejorado (@ari.mejorado) is an artist from Los Angeles who works through analog and digital image-making processes to contemplate ideas around memory, landscape, and placemaking. Often working intuitively, Mejorado’s practice ranges from traditional documenting to staging scenes that merge elements of installation, performance, and studio photography.

LACE’s new group exhibition “A Tender Excavati LACE’s new group exhibition “A Tender Excavation” curated by Selene Preciado opens at the Luckman Gallery at CSULA on Saturday, November 1! “A Tender Excavation” approaches research-based artistic practices through propositions of alternative histories, bringing together a group of artists that work with historical and familial photographic archives as a point of departure to construct new narratives and elicit transformation. Artists featured in the exhibition include Zeynep Abes, Susu Attar, Jamil Baldwin, Mely Barragán, Artemisa Clark, Arleene Correa Valencia, Mercedes Dorame, Prima Jalichandra-Sakuntabhai, Leah King, Tarrah Krajnak, Heesoo Kwon, Ann Le, Arlene Mejorado, Star Montana, and Camille Wong. “A Tender Excavation” is on view from November 1, 2025–February 21, 2026.
