Nor Here Neither There

“Nor Here Neither There” spot in LACE’s May/June 1994 calendar

June 16 – July 27, 1994

An exhibition which critiqued the current conditions of artmaking in their particularities.

The title “Nor Here Neither There” might suggest the difficulty in assigning and encapsulating an exhibition with a title, a difficulty that has become the motor for the curatorial prerogative of this exhibition. The exhibition did not begin with an agenda nor did it arrive at one. This is not to suggest that the position occupied is ideologically wishy-washy. It is not meant to ride the fence but to respond to current conditions of art-making in their particularities. The artists include Doug Aitken, Tom Burr, Willie Cole, Stan Doulgas, Valie Export, Chris Finley, Suzanne Garrison, Ideal Copy, Sharon Lockhart, Mythter, Lorraine O’Grady, Spandau Parks, Cynthia Stewart, and Nari Ward. The show was curated by Charles Gaines, Paul McCarthy, Stephen Prina, and Fran Seegull.

The artists in exhibition are:
Doug Aitken, who will show a single channel video work, lives in New York.
Tom Burr, who will create a site specific installation using audio and the forms of documentary, lives in New York.
Willie Cole, who will show assemblage sculpture, live in New York.
Stan Douglas, who will exhibit a video projection and photographic installation, lives in Vancouver.
Chris Finley, who will exhibit sculpture, lives in Cotati, California.
Suzanne Garrison, who will exhibit paintings, lives in New York.
Ideal Copy, who will create a site-specific performance, lives in Kyoto, Japan.
Sharon Lockhart, who will show photographs and a 16mm film, lives in Pasadena.
Mythter, who will present a musical performance, lives in Los Angeles.
Lorraine O’Grady, who will exhibit photographs, lives in New York.
Spandau Parks, who will show paintings, lives in Los Angeles.
Cynthia Stewart, who will exhibit photographs and present a spoken word performance, lives in Long Beach.
Nari Ward, who will exhibit assemblage sculpture, lives in New York.
“Nor Here Neither There” is presented in the Peter Norton Family Gallery, the Fred and Janet Kessier Gallery, the Video gallery and the Performance gallery. Funding for this project was provided by the Cultural Affairs Department of the City of Los Angeles and the National Endowment for the Arts. Gallery hours are Wednesday through Sunday 12-6 pm. A catalog will be published as a document of the exhibition later this summer.

This Saturday, the LACE Screening Room presents, “Obsidian Reflections” from 2–5 PM at the Philosophical Research Society (@philosophical_research_society).

This film program is followed by a musical performance with multimedia NeoCumbia artist El Keamo (@el_keamo). El Keamo is the alias of Alfredo González-Martínez, a first-generation Mexican-American multimedia artist from Reseda, California. With an innovative blend of cumbia sonidera, tribal, house, and acid genres, El Keamo’s Neocumbia project is a modern interpretation of traditional Latin rhythms fused with electronic synthesis, creating a unique sound that is both familiar and boldly avant-garde.

This event is FREE and you can RSVP at the link in our bio!

"ENDURANCE" presented performance art and interdisciplinary work by elder artists. These artists use their practices to share wisdom, knowledge, and experiences that they have gained throughout their lives. This series is a companion program to LACE’s 2024 performance series, "ABUNDANCE," both featuring often invisibilized bodies.

This program was held at L.A. Dance Project from May 16–17, 2025.

The online presentation of "ENDURANCE" is supported by the Department of Cultural Affairs, City of Los Angeles (@culture_la).

This touring film program is collectively curated and presented by 16 international arts organizations and convened by Forma (@formaartsmedia). AFI’25 introduces the work of talented moving image artists to worldwide audiences, and will be live over 300 days, with exhibitions, screenings and public programs hosted across 4 continents.

LACE’s selection for AFI’25 is "Leymusoom Garden: New Sun" (2024) by Heesoo Kwon (@leymusoom). Kwon’s oneiric visual language and unique animation style allow her to create memoryscapes of personal and community liberation. The film rewrites mythical matrilineal histories through utopian and whimsical abstractions of time, space, and memory to ultimately bring forth healing and transformation.

Admission is free! RSVP at the link in our bio.
