A conversation between The Fire Theory artists members: Mauricio Esquivel, Melissa Guevara, Ernesto Bautista, Mauricio Kabistán, and Crack Rodríguez. The talk focuses on their collaborative practice, forms of co-creating and weaving together their individual practices, and their reflections on historical memory, exclusion, and displacement stemming from their unique Salvadoran perspective. The talk will highlight contemporary artistic practices from El Salvador and TFT’s critical role in building networks of solidarity and connections across communities and cultures.

Una conversación entre lxs miembros de The Fire Theory: Mauricio Esquivel, Melissa Guevara, Ernesto Bautista, Mauricio Kabistán y Crack Rodríguez. La charla se centrará en su práctica colaborativa, en las formas de co-creación y como entretejen sus prácticas individuales, así como sus reflexiones sobre memoria histórica, exclusión y desplazamiento desde su particular perspectiva salvadoreña. La charla se centrará en las prácticas artísticas contemporáneas de El Salvador y en el rol crítico de TFT en la construcción de redes de solidaridad y conexiones entre comunidades y culturas.


Speaker Bios:

Ernesto Bautista is a founding member of The Fire Theory Collective. Bautista works and produces in El Salvador, Mexico, and Colombia. Much in line with The Fire Theory’s own ideology, where the need that all members keep up their individual art practice next to the collaborative work is emphasized, Bautista today will be sharing more on his personal art practice. Bautista’s work often tends to reflect on the individual and their relationship with the social and the political by exploring concepts of forgotten memory and history.

Ernesto Bautista es miembro fundador de The Fire Theory Collective. Bautista trabaja y produce en El Salvador, México, y Colombia. Actuando en línea con la propia ideología de The Fire Theory, donde enfocan la necesidad que todos los miembros mantengan su práctica de arte individual junto al trabajo colaborativo, Bautista hoy nos compartirá mas sobre su forma artística. en la que explora conceptos de memoria e historias olvidadas. Su trabajo tiende a la reflexión sobre el individuo y su relación con lo social y lo político. El trabajo de Bautista usualmente tiende a reflexionar sobre el individuo y su relación con lo social explorando conceptos de memoria e historia olvidadas.

Melissa Guevara is a founding member of The Fire Theory. She works and produces in El Salvador and Colombia. Her practice is born out of an interest in the historical and personal significance of symbols. She does this by focusing on personal reflections, discomforts, fears, and beliefs that are then translated into visual experiences. Melissa has participated in a number of programs and residencies such as Chicicaste, Panajachel, Guatemala, Campos de Gutiérrez, Medellín, and Taller 7 in Medellin.

Melissa Guevara miembro fundador del colectivo The Fire Theory. Melissa trabaja y produce en El Salvador y Colombia. Su práctica nace de un interés por el significado histórico y personal de los símbolos. Con ello, se centra en reflexiones personales, incomodidades, miedos, y creencias que luego se traducen en experiencias visuales. Melissa ha participado en varios programas y residencias como Chicicaste, Panajachel, Guatemala, Campos de Gutierrez y Taller 7 ambos en Medellin.

Mauricio Kabistán was born in Managua, Nicaragua and now works and lives in El Salvador. He is a former member of the Artificio Collective. He was also an official representative of El Salvador in the 56th edition of the Venice Biennale. Today, Kabistán will share with us more on his individual art practice, which focuses on concepts of culture, heritage, and memory and explores the many forms they manifest beyond the abstract.

Fue miembro del Colectivo Artificio y también representante oficial de El Salvador en la 56ª edición de el Venice Biennale. Hoy, Kabistán compartirá con nosotros más sobre su propia práctica, que se centra en conceptos de cultura, patrimonio y memoria y explora las muchas formas en la cual se manifiestan más allá de lo abstracto.

Mauricio Esquivel is a founding member of The Fire Theory. Esquivel was born in El Salvador, now works and lives in New York. Today, Maurico will be sharing more about his individual work, which explores the different social issues affecting our lives every day such as violence, migration, and the complex relationship between history and sociocultural memory. Mauricio positions these issues as the central axis in his work in order to critically examine them.

Maurico Esquivel, miembro fundador de The Fire Theory Collective. Esquivel, nació en El Salvador, ahora trabaja y vive en Nueva York. Hoy Maurico compartirá con nosotros más sobre su práctica artística, que explora los diferentes problemáticas sociales que afectan a nuestras vidas cotidianas, como la violencia, la migración y la compleja relación entre la historia y la memoria sociocultural. Mauricio posiciona estos problemas como el eje central de su trabajo para poder críticamente cuestionarlos.

Crack Rodríguez
Crack Rodríguez is an activist, artist, and founding member of the artist production collective “The Fire Theory”  as well as the movement/collective “Los Siempre Sospechosos de Todo” (The always suspicious of everything)⁠⁠. His practice, along with his collaborators’, together and separately are intrinsically related to the social, political, and popular culture, and aim to build strong ties with the public where reaction and or participation become a large part of the work.⁠⁠

Crack Rodríguez nos está visitando desde El Salvador. Rodríguez artista y miembro fundador del colectivo de producción artística “The Fire Theory”, así como del movimiento/colectivo “Los Siempre Sospechosos de Todo”. ⁠⁠Sus prácticas grupales y en solitario están intrínsecamente relacionadas con la cultura social, política y popular, y apuntan a construir fuertes lazos con el público donde la reacción y / o participación se convierten en una gran parte del trabajo.⁠⁠

As part of a special Mother’s Day celebration in As part of a special Mother’s Day celebration in 1990, Freshly Wrapped Candies headlined a two-night celebration of motherhood at LACE, featuring an eclectic group of artists, musicians, poets, and performers. 

Among them was Anna Homler (@homlerian), who will be performing with Jeff Schwartz and David Javelosa (@microwave_buddha) during “ENDURANCE” next Sunday, May 17.

Happening May 16 and 17, “ENDURANCE” presents Happening May 16 and 17, “ENDURANCE” presents performance art and interdisciplinary work by elder artists. 🔶 

Pictured here is “BLACK GOLD/FEVER,” a 2011 multi-media performance by Ulysses Jenkins. The performance called back to the artist’s 1980 piece, also performed at LACE, entitled “Columbus Day: a doggerel.” Utilizing dance, video projections, music, and spoken word, “BLACK GOLD/FEVER” measured the toll placed upon the environment and Indigenous peoples. 

See Ulysses Jenkins and the Dark Bob as part of “ENDURANCE.” This event is free to attend with RSVP. Tickets are going quickly, and LACE has created a wait list to accommodate interest. Click the link in our bio for more information.
