Performance de clausura: “An Infected Sunset” (Un Atardecer Infectado)

Performance de clausura: An Infected Sunset (Un Atardecer Infectado) por Demian Diné ‘Yahzi’ en colaboración con Holland Andrews.

Sábado mayo 25, 6-9pm. Acompaños a presenciar este performance para celebrar juntxs la clausura de la exposición, Unraveling Collective Forms (Desenredando Formas Colectivas) el 25 de mayo.

An Infected Sunset (Un Atardecer Infectado) es un poema inicialmente concebido en agosto de 2016 en respuesta a los acontecimientos de los tiroteos en el antro Pulse en Orlando, los asesinatos de hombres Negros cometidos por policías, y la resistencia de Standing Rock, #NoDAPL. Mientras se escribió este poema, el colonizador nación-estado eligió a su cuadragésimo quinto del país colonial. presidente, que reveló un repentino resurgimiento de la supremacía blanca y el nacionalismo extremo. Al ver como el paisaje  político y sociale evolucionó, el POEMA LIBERADORLIBERATED POEM (Poema Liberada) emergió como una ofrenda a las comunidades y paisajes indígenas quienes luchan por un futuro decolonial y soberano, emancipado del dramático trauma que proviene desde el estado colonial, supremacistas blancos, capitalistas y el hetero-patriarcado. Este performance poético es una reflexión sobre sexo queer, politicas de sobrevivencia y muerte, identidad indígena, romanticismo colonial y heternormativo, injusticia del ambiente, y la importancia de honrar a la comunidad. 

Los filmes de Demian DinéYahzi, An Infected Sunset y Oceti Šakowiŋ, son parte de la exhibición, Unraveling Collective Forms (Desenredando Formas Colectivas).

Demian DinéYazhi’ (n. 1983) es un artista transdisciplinario Indígena Diné nacido en el clan de Naasht’ézhí Táb´´há (Zuni Clan Water’s Edge) y Tódích’íí’nii (Bitter Water). Creciendo en un pueblo fronterizo colonizado de Gallup en Nuevo Mexico, la evolución de las obras de Diné Yazhi´ han sido influenciado por su lazos ancestrales a la cultura tradicional Diné, ceremonia, educacion matrilineal, la tierra sagrada, y la importancia de conocimiento intergeneracional. A través de investigaciones, minando archivos comunitarios, colaboración social, Diné Yazhi´ ilumina las intersecciones de identidad y ideologia politica indigena radical, queer y feminsta a las misma vez retar el ruido blanco de arte contemporáneo. Diné Yazhi´ ha exhibido recientemente en Whitney Museum of American Art (2018), Henry Art Gallery (2018), Pioneer Works (2018), CANADA, NY (2017); and Cooley Art Gallery (2017). Diné Yazhi´ es un fundador de una iniciativa para artistas y activistas indígenas, RISE: Radical Indigenous Survivance & Empowerment. Diné Yazhi´ también participa como un co-editor de la revista, Locusts: A Post-Queer Nation Zine. Diné Yazhi´ es uno de los recipientes de  Henry Art Museum’s Brink Awards (2017), Hallie Ford Fellow in the Visual Arts (2018), y Eiteljorg Contemporary Art Fellow (2019).

Holland Andrews es una vocalista, compositora y performer Americana cuyo práctica es basado en la emocionalidad y sus formas variadas. En su trabajo de composición, Andrews se enfoca en la abstracción de técnicas extendidas y voz operatico para construir paisajes sonoros que abarca el catarismo y disonancia. A traves de el clarinete y voz, Andrews compone junto temas sobre vulnerabilidad y saneamiento; esto ilumina las cualidades esenciales de sus instrumentos. Como música, la influencias de Andrews radica de un rango dinámico de músicos quienes influenciaron ópera contemporánea, teatro musical, musica de ambiente y ruidos. Andrew hace su rendimiento bajo un nombre de escenario: Like a Villain (Como un villano). En adición a su trabajo como solista, Andrews desarrolla y rinde paisajes sonoros para danza, teatro, artistas de filmes; su trabajo ha recorrido viajes nacionales e internacionales. Andrews ha recibido reconocimiento por publicaciones importantes como The New York Times, Le Monde, La Republica, Business Time, y mas. Holland Andrews radica en Portland, Oregon.

We're excited to work with two new Getty Marrow Un We're excited to work with two new Getty Marrow Undergraduate Interns this summer! 

💫 Becca Choe, LACE's Curatorial Intern, is a student at Pomona College studying Art and Politics. She is interested in exploring themes of immigration, home, industrialization, and South Korean political movements with her work as both a student and artist.

💫 Jada Wong, LACE's Communications and Media Intern, is an illustrator, printmaker, and educator who creates whimsical characters and stories to make sense of the world around her. Jada merges her love for the absurd and humor with themes of identity, community, and social justice in her work.

We’re grateful to everyone who joined us at “T We’re grateful to everyone who joined us at “This Home, Forever,” curated by 2025 LACE Emerging Curator Nahui Garcia. The two-day event featured performances by: @0ll668 @perras.bravas @lapovertydepartment  @michelelorusso @pacoimatechno @jakioeoeo

These performances took place during a fraught weekend for Los Angeles, with sirens and helicopters heard across downtown Los Angeles. On Sunday, @perras.bravas performed “Borderland Feelings,” a piece that seeks to shed light on and gather testimonies about the experiences, emotions, and demands that emerge when crossing the border. Participants were invited to share their border-crossing experiences by writing or illustrating them on a butterfly. These butterflies were later read aloud during the performance and placed on a body, symbolizing how the border becomes a scar that marks those who cross it.

This performance, along with the rest of the program, felt especially significant on that day. LACE remains committed to presenting socially-engaged projects and was founded as an experimental artistic space for freedom of expression and art that is socially and politically engaging. 

We’re glad to have shared space with LACE friends, collaborators, and colleagues, as well as new friends.

 🌟 LACE’s new Communications + Event Coordinator, Ida Tongkumvong is a Los Angeles-based arts administrator and marketing professional with a passion for expanding access to the arts and fostering inclusivity within creative spaces. She holds a B.A. in Communications from UCLA. Her previous roles with Sounding Point, the LA Phil, and CAP UCLA deepened her commitment to broadening arts access through strategic partnerships, inclusive programming, and dynamic storytelling. With a keen interest in public art and community-based initiatives, Ida brings a thoughtful and collaborative approach to audience development and creative event planning within L.A.’s contemporary arts landscape. Outside of work, you’ll often find her at a flea market or estate sale, always on the hunt for a one-of-a-kind find.

 🌟 LACE’s new Production + Operations Coordinator, Johnny Young began making his mark on the Los Angeles arts scene as Gallery and Programming Manager for the Juicy Beats Artist Exchange Lounge in 2000. He has worked with the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), where he played a key role in production and management for their First Fridays program; he was also selected for the prestigious Diversity Apprenticeship Program (DAP) at The Broad, a competitive initiative aimed at training the next generation of museum and gallery professionals from underrepresented communities. Johnny brings a sharp eye for detail, a commitment to equity in the arts, and a dedication to amplifying voices that challenge the boundaries of convention.
