LACE is proud to be a platform for emerging curators, supporting the next generation of artists and voices. This year, we engaged in film and moving image projects through our Emerging Curator Program and the LACE Screening Series.

Our Emerging Curator presentation, “A Fossil, A Ruin, A Memory” curated by Carrie Chen (@carriechen01), featured artists whose work considerd the lanaguage of memory, navigate transnational spaces, confront displacement and yearning, and excavate personal and collective memories. Featured artists include Zeynep Abes (@zabes93), Coffee Kang (@coffeeekang), Heesoo Kwon 권희수 (@leymusoom), April Lin 林 (@babe__lin), Jas Lin 林思穎, Yuchi Ma 马语迟 (@streetcornyuchi), Iman Person (@imanperson_studio), Tiare Ribeaux (@tiareribeaux), Ainslee Alem Robson (@ahhslay), somuhwa (@somuhwa.ai), Qigemu 七个木, Yaloo (@yalooreality), Qianqian Ye (@44ian), and Evelyn Hang Yin (@haannngggg).

In addition, we launched the LACE Screening Room, presenting film programs like “The Whore Gaze,” curated by Elizabeth Dayton and Kim Ye (@kimyekimyekimye); “BLAQUE ORBIT” curated by Camm Harrison (@blackrevivalist); and “Radical Botany” curated by Anya Ventura (@aventuraaaaaaaaaa).

In April, we premiered “ABUNDANCE,” a multiday performance art series that presented cutting edge performance art and interdisciplinary work by artists whose lived experiences as non-traditional or fat bodies challenge intersectional forms of oppression.

“ABUNDANCE” featured works by Patrisse Cullors with Ashley Blakeney and Darius Williams, Edgar Fabián Frías, GayCay, Jessica Carolina González, Vanessa Hernández Cruz, Alima Lee, Caleb Luna, Melba Martínez, Cody Perkins with Sabrina Johnson, Ghis Rodríguez, Yesika Salgado, and Dorian Wood.

This year, we continued to champion and challenge

This year, we continued to champion and challenge the art of our time through groundbreaking performances like “La Cantadora Shamana de Cabaret” and “ABUNDANCE.”

On Valentine’s Day, we premiered “La Cantadora Shamana de Cabaret” by Carmina Escobar (@carminaescobar). In this performative ritual—part opera, part incantation, and part comedic examination—Carmina examined her life as an “erotic export”—a woman-creature, bird-spirit, in whose veins boils the antagonist sex of oppressor and oppressed, a product of the the mestizo heritage.

In the spring, we presented “ABUNDANCE,” a performance art series featuring artists whose lived experiences as non-traditional or fat bodies challenge intersectional forms of oppression.
