Wild Oscillations

January 24, 2019 – 7PM

Experimental vocalists Carmina Escobar, soprano sound artist Micaela Tobin, and special guest from Mexico City, visual sound artist Juan José Rivas perform in LACE’s main gallery.

Juanjosé currently is Artistic Director of VOLTA, a series of international concerts of sound art and experimental music in Mexico City and member of the the National System of Art Creators of FONCA.

Micaela Tobin is a soprano, sound artist, and teacher based in Los Angeles, CA who specializes in experimental voice and contemporary opera, composing under the moniker “White Boy Scream.” Within this project Micaela dissects her operatic and extended vocal techniques through the use of electronics as a means of reclaiming the “diva.” She has performed extensively throughout the western United States, most notably as a guest with hip-hop experimentalists “clipping.” during their 2017 tour in support of The Flaming Lips. Micaela’s most recent full length release, “Remains” (Crystalline Morphologies) was listed as one of the top 10 Noise/Industrial Albums of 2018 by The Wire Magazine. www.micaelatobin.com

Experimental vocalist Carmina Escobar is a performer, improviser, sound and intermedia artist from Mexico City. Her work focuses primarily on sound, the voice, the body, and their interrelations to physical, social, memory and present spaces. She has extensively explored the capacities of her voice developing a wide range of vocal techniques that she applies not only to her performance and creative practice but also to investigate radical ideas and concepts regarding the voice. In her artwork the Voice is the phenomenon and conceptual trigger that links all the materials, analogue or digital, in order to create an experience that sets in motion the audience perception.
