Women on a Mission

November 15, 1992

Joyce Guy, Adillah Barnes, G. Colette Jackson, Michelle T. Clinton, Satori, Robbie Mescudi and Brandyn Barbara Artis commenced a mission of transforming themselves and the community-at-large by creating new language to describe the experience of African American women.

We congratulate Abby Lee (@__abigaillee) on the completion of her Media Internship through Emerson College, Los Angeles (@emersonlosangeles)! Abby contributed to our marketing and communications strategies, and supported our signature LACE Emerging Curator program by creating a promotional video that highlights its 10th anniversary.

“As I wrap up my internship at LACE, I am deeply appreciative of having been able to learn about the behind-the-scenes work of this nonprofit art gallery. I joined the team as a media intern this fall, focusing specifically on communications. Within my role, I contributed to social media and newsletter marketing and also documented LACE’s public programs through photography and videography. I additionally worked on a semester-long project creating a promotional video for LACE’s Emerging Curator program that celebrates its 10th anniversary and provides information about the program. This project involved filming several in-person and virtual interviews with past emerging curators and culminated in a 5-minute video that will go on LACE’s website.

This internship has been incredibly valuable in helping me further develop my digital communications and media production skills. It’s also just been a very fun experience learning from LACE’s wonderful team and exploring the art scene in L.A. Special thanks to my supervisor, Camille, and Sarah, Juan, and Selene for a great semester at LACE!”

📣 We are thrilled to share that LACE has received generous support from the Ruth Foundation for the Arts (@ruthfoundationforthearts) and the California Community Foundation (@calfund)!

As a 2024 Core Grant recipient from the Ruth Foundation for the Arts, LACE joins 90 arts and cultural organizations nationwide in receiving vital operating funds to support creativity, experimentation, and access in the arts.

Additionally, through a two-year core operating grant from the California Community Foundation, we’re excited to continue producing curatorial and creative programs in LA County. This support advances meaningful pathways into the creative economy for individuals from BIPOC and queer communities, aligning with CCF’s arts and culture strategy.

We are grateful for these awards and look forward to continuing our work fostering innovative and inclusive arts programming!

LACE is proud to be a platform for emerging curators, supporting the next generation of artists and voices. This year, we engaged in film and moving image projects through our Emerging Curator Program and the LACE Screening Series.

Our Emerging Curator presentation, “A Fossil, A Ruin, A Memory” curated by Carrie Chen (@carriechen01), featured artists whose work considerd the lanaguage of memory, navigate transnational spaces, confront displacement and yearning, and excavate personal and collective memories. Featured artists include Zeynep Abes (@zabes93), Coffee Kang (@coffeeekang), Heesoo Kwon 권희수 (@leymusoom), April Lin 林 (@babe__lin), Jas Lin 林思穎, Yuchi Ma 马语迟 (@streetcornyuchi), Iman Person (@imanperson_studio), Tiare Ribeaux (@tiareribeaux), Ainslee Alem Robson (@ahhslay), somuhwa (@somuhwa.ai), Qigemu 七个木, Yaloo (@yalooreality), Qianqian Ye (@44ian), and Evelyn Hang Yin (@haannngggg).

In addition, we launched the LACE Screening Room, presenting film programs like “The Whore Gaze,” curated by Elizabeth Dayton and Kim Ye (@kimyekimyekimye); “BLAQUE ORBIT” curated by Camm Harrison (@blackrevivalist); and “Radical Botany” curated by Anya Ventura (@aventuraaaaaaaaaa).
