Public Interest: Projects and Prototypes

Expand your thinking of public art in this Los Angeles-centric look at the burgeoning field of arts-based public projects and practices. Fourtenn artists and collectives offer rapid-fire presentations to examine a range of arts approaches, followed by a series of peer-to-peer breakout sessions. Co-presented by LACE and Otis College of Art & Design’s MFA Public Practice Program, this day-long convening takes a look at the burgeoning field of arts-based public projects and practices. This program brings together LACE’s PUBLIC INTEREST initiative that showcases contemporary art, architecture and design practices that challenge standard notions of public space through creative actions and Otis MFA Public Practice’s educational events, a higher degree college program dedicated to furthering dialogue within the Los Angeles public arts community.
The LACE convening is the culminating dialogue in a 3-day initiative called STREET SMART. Beginning Wednesday, November 10 with Farther Afield, the series kicks off with a public lecture by writer, curator, art historian and intellectual Lucy Lippard at the 18th Street Art Center. The following evening, join writer, critic, sociologist, and expert on punk subculture Dick Hebidge for After the Fall: From Punk to Porn-etration to ‘Let’s be Facebook Frendz!!’ at The Broad Stage, Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center.
Confirmed participants for Projects and Prototypes include the LA Urban Rangers, Llano del Rio Collective, Portable City Projects, Elysian Park Museum of Art, FEAST, Propeller Group, the Watts House Project, Public Matters, Los Angeles Poverty Department, Rori Knudtson, Sonja Hinrichson, Krista Caballero and Matthew Slaats.
