ReVisions of LA with Tony Banuelos, Rebecca Niederlander, and Nicolas Shake

LACE is located in the heart of Hollywood, an ideal place to observe and contemplate the collision of Los Angeles — its intricate networks hum with activity as resources are transferred and spaces are reconstructed through use or development. ASAP’s 2011 Re-Visions of LA drawing workshops will build conversations around how our urban environments are constructed and what that means to our every day lives.Each month a new group of artists will spend an afternoon at LACE providing free drawing classes.
All levels and ages are welcome as we talk about Hollywood while drawing our surroundings.
All workshops are free, and all materials will be supplied.
ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Tony Banuelos is a multi-disciplinary artist living in Los Angeles, CA, though he is not a native Angeleno. He has been a transplant for more than eight years in the greater Los Angeles area. LA has become mixtures of homes, tourist destinations, movie sets, and unknown voids. He often works in performance/video-installation, and has also gravitated towards other projects that have taken the form of web art, “street art”, storyboard/comic illustration, screenplay writing, DJ sets, and dance parties. Tony received his BFA from the University of California, Irvine, and his MFA from CalArts in Valencia, CA.
Rebecca Niederlander is a visual artist and co-founder of BROODWORK: Creative Practice and Family Life, living in Los Angeles, CA. In her creative practice she explores the relationships between architecture and the domestic world, the individual and the community. In BROODWORK Niederlander and co-founder Iris Anna Regn curate, write, and design events that explore the interweaving of the creative practices and family life–in particular, parenthood. Their current exhibition locally is BROODWORK: It’s About Time at OTIS College of Art and Design, and internationally they just sent the video programme BROODWORK: Marking Time to the Trajector Art Fair at Art Brussels. Rebecca is also a contributing writer for Herman Miller’s online project Lifework. Niederlander is a recipient of grants from the Durfee Foundation, Pasadena Arts Alliance, and the Cornell University Council of Creative and Performing Arts. She has been written about in a variety of books and journals including Artillery Magazine, Artweek and the Los Angeles Times. She assisted in curating LACMA’s Color and Fire: Defining Moments in Studio Ceramics, 1950-2000 exhibit for which she also wrote the catalog essay Better Living through Tea: Contemporary Artists Investigating Two forms (published by Rizzoli Press). Nicolas Shake was born (1981) and raised in greater Los Angeles, in 2004 he relocated to Providence, Rhode Island where he attend Rhode Island School of Design and received his BFA in 2008. He is currently an MFA candidate at Claremont Graduate University in Claremont California. Since returning to the West Coast he has be been shown in numerous group show along with conducting lecture, workshops, and curatorial work. His works address the entropy that is generated with our object-dominated society while referencing the historical traditions of Dutch still life and pastoral painting.
