ReVisions of LA with Miguel Felipe, Albert Reyes, and Jaime Zacarias

LACE is located in the heart of Hollywood, an ideal place to observe and contemplate the collision of Los Angeles — its intricate networks hum with activity as resources are transferred and spaces are reconstructed through use or development. ASAP’s 2011 Re-Visions of LA drawing workshops will build conversations around how our urban environments are constructed and what that means to our every day lives. Each month a new group of artists will spend an afternoon at LACE providing free drawing classes.

All levels and ages are welcome as we talk about Hollywood while drawing our surroundings.

All workshops are free, and all materials will be supplied.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Miguel Felipe was originally born in Guatamala, his family immigrated to the US in the early 1980’s. Art has always been a vital part of Felipe’s life. Studying under various artists and being involved in a number of non traditional art programs helped develop Felipe’s skills, as well as place him in numerous shows through out California and parts of the east coast.  The current body of work is an engaging look into the contrast and juxtaposition of images. Attempting to visually digest and extract what is needed from images to expand his visual language.  This is related to the way mass media bombards us with multiple images that we process and filter at different conscious levels. Albert Reyes is a Los Angeles-based artist whose hyper-realistic yet dreamlike drawings address themes both personal and cultural. His canvas has ranged from recycled hardcover book covers to public sidewalks, where his beer spit drawings drew national media attention along with his original illustrations and fine art prints. Jaime Zacarias (Germs) was born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. The surrounding gang violence of the neighborhood influenced his views and life. Despite attending some of the most under-served schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District Zacarias found his artistic talent being supported and nourished through out elementary school and into high school. He continues to live and work in Los Angeles. His art is characterized by spontaneity and randomness. Using narrative imagery, graffiti art, and found surfaces, he seeks to connect with the viewer in an audience -friendly way that allows them to experience the piece. In response to MOCA’s recent ‘Art in the Streets’ show, Kelsey Riley (KELSO LA) has selected 3 local artists who are deeply involved in the Los Angeles street art scene to instruct the REVISIONS of LA drawing workshop at LACE.  Miguel Felipe, Albert Reyes, and Jaime Zacarias (Germs) create imaginative and spontaneous paintings and drawings on a range of surfaces from paper, to canvas, to cement, responding to their experience in the Los Angeles area and speaking to the way urban space shapes our every day lives.  Art made on the skin of the city we live in, or made elsewhere (in a home, studio, or print shop) in direct response to the the life lived in those streets is a vital part of the art world and often opens conversations past academic or institutional boundaries.  These artists will be spending the afternoon at LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions) on October 2nd, 2011 in order to share their experience both in life and the creative process and continue the conversation encouraged by MOCA’s ‘Art in the Streets’ show about the validity of street art in contemporary urban life.
